Also known as a multi-employer fund, this is a fund to which employees of a number of employers belong. The members of the board of the fund are usually appointed by the fund’s sponsor or creator (usually a fund administrator, insurer, bargaining council or union) rather than by the members and their employers. The rates at which contributions are made in respect of members employed by specific employers and the benefits to which such members are entitled, may be captured in what are known as “special rules” which form annexes to the main body of rules that provide for the governance, operation and management of the fund.
